HostGator’s billing email notifications include a link to the billing website, our username (which is our email address) and our password (which is the same as the login to our ftp, cpanel, etc). I replied to HostGator’s billing@ email suggesting that our passwords be excluded from the email notifications for security purposes. I received a polite but too quick a reply with the answer below…

I find it hard to believe that a company with the customer base and resources that you have didn’t take the time to make a new page on your website http://support.hostgator.com/ (which links to http://www.hostgator.com/billing ) to address the issue of customers having a legacy and a new billing system to login to. It took an extra twenty minutes of my date to figure this out that I am supposed to login to https://gbclient.hostgator.com/ . At first thinking that I might have forgotten either the email address that I had used or had inadvertently changed my password.

I wanted to say that I love the LiveChat system, because there have been many times (and I don’t know why) for some reason, when I change my cPanel password, sometimes the system screws up and I have to contact tech support to get the password problem straightened out. I just like being able to get assistance and back to work within a few minutes, and not having to wait on hold for 30+ minutes to talk to a human (I’ve never used the phone support ever, simply because the LiveChat system has been able to take care of any of my problems so far).

In the cpanel mysql-databases there is no script for changing the password of db-users. I suppose it can be done with a sql-query. But before you do that, you must be very sure that the syntax is correct.

What’s the purpose of a password if, on first mistyping it, it is automatically emailed to you, plain text , without you even requesting it? This is currently the case with HostGator’s ticket system (it seems that in other password-protected subsystems in HG password handling is done right). I would expect a professional and reputable company like HostGator to email password upon explicit request by user only.
